City (Street) by Rosanella

City Street (London, 18th August 2009)

The city awakens in the early hours
A fox throttles down the street,
its stomach filled, satisfied
while a rat returns to sleep.
Silence is broken
A lorry is roaring, piercing the quiet street
alas the birds won’t return to sleep
Streetlights are now dimming
A new day makes its way in
Embracing this street that never sleeps.

Poets’ Window- International Poetry Evening
International Poetry Evening at Ashbees Wine Bar in Earls Court. In addition to the
‘Poets’ Window’ poem’s being read, we had poems written by acclaimed Poets from
around the world read by native speakers, followed by the English translation.

Spanish poem, read by Mario
La Ciudad
Gabriel Aresti (1963)

The City
read by Chris

They are made of concrete and glass /of strange places and busy people. /Within every
one grows a tree / in front of the house of the suicidal / and there are children who are
used to falling asleep / dreaming of a dog. / No lack of breakfasts in luxury hotels, /
nor families with a garden, / but more often / dark doorways with couples, / the cold
kiss, / the cement rose on the window.
The streets spill into distorted squares,/ Sundays afternoons into coffee houses,/ car
fumes into the eyes of the mad/ who murmurs the years / counting them with no end/
from tube to tube./ As we exit the tunnels we feel / that the watery skies / are the same
as a letter from the past / and it’s usually understood/ that life is a slow weapon and is
double edged / in pace with no-one,/ in the empty nights,/ or in the weaknesses that
cities have for/ local cinemas / and painted clerks.
Despite the banana trees, the elm and the lime / despite the grass, if we speak about the
north / the people who stare at us,/ the people who run red lights,/ the people who pass
in front of the shops, / need the shelter of other vegetation:/ a stealth of numbers and
credit cards/ its roots enter basements/ and look for solitude in attics/ like furniture and
old rats.
Travelling is not pointless,/ it’s true that all cities/ wake in similar ways,/ but the
night comes to everyone/ in different ways./ During the day can be seen/ secretaries,
doormen, policemen, / street musicians and soldiers, / shop assistants who listen and
smile,/ office workers smelling like application forms,/ drivers, odd priests,/ humiliated
executives./ The same as everywhere,/ because the miles between hardly exist,/ but the
night it exists,/ solitude erases all professions/ in a world inhabited solely/ by men and
women,/ confessions of bitter courage.
In all cities can be found / clocks that stop at last orders,/ the moon over a cab/
and all the poems I write for you.

City

Muddy serpent writhes, cloud-
dappled light spangling from the squalls,
entangling
with manmade acrid clouds
acting as shrouds for the spite,
for the right to exist,
to subsist ,whilst people
suffer (or excel) and everything
between: a prism of humanity
where purple are the battered masses,
yellow the chosen few who succeed
at everything they do.
And we?
We are the crimson, the sapphire,
the emerald and the fuchsia riptide.
We are the in-betweeners, the
down-and-outers.
We are the forgotten.

City

Mad scenes! And really, who needs grass
When such other sights amuse my eyes?
Buildings and vegetables lining the skies
Ten thousand degrees, or creeds and castes

Such smells too! The Covent Gardenias sweet
Rosey dawns and other nasal treats
From here to there I'm certain to meet.
A few steps more? The stench of old feet.

I AM NOT GOING TO TELL YOU THE NAME OF THE CITY

I am not going to tell you the name of the city
in which my steps are still searching for me.

I am not going to tell you the name of the city
whose bridges are longer than life

I am not going to tell you the name of the city
under whom even the sky was like a tent's wing

I am not going to tell you the name of the city
in which I learned to start up a new journey
as soon as I arrive.

I am not going to tell you the name of the city
which is never to grow old

I am not going to tell you the name of the city
in which I met the eyes with the color of the sky

I am not going to tell you the name of the city
in which I was knocking on my own doors from inside

I am not going to tell you the name of the city
which was far too small cage for my wings

The City ⓒFassbinder 2009

The city shapes you:

Square mile
Scaffolders poles
Pattern facades
Borders

Round of drinks
Triangle of Bizarre Love
Curved life.

Oval to
Mornington Crescent or
Belsize Park then
Bendy Bus and
Circle Line
Black taxi with its turning circle
Traffic Cones snake around

The Gherkin.

I am in the bus at the red stop
I see people in a café
Talking-of their life threads
From the outside I witness
like soap bubbles floating in the air
Bits of stories gathered in one place
The city

Emotions frozen
Eye contacts
Smiles touching
Thoughts colliding
at one point
once upon a time
The city is all about cutting across
The other felt human soul…
A landscape of lives

I'm creating a map of London
I walk the distances
between the stations
and link them.

I predict the next stop
I discover new shortcuts.
And I make the city mine at last.
Without forgetting to smile
every time I pass over
a bridge
that reminds me
I'm still here.

kilburn weekend lunchtime
simon sylvester

Spitting, spinning, swearing, fuck ‘em
No more for me, boys
I’m off home
the reds have let us down again that second half
was like the Somme
glares on Kilburn High Street
thought it was only Irish round here

“Sir
spare a penny oh won’t you spare a penny?”

and

“Nada, nada, los desaparecidos”
He leers stinking garlic
moustache waxed and eyebrows
into tips

and

melon rinds
upon the rainwater gritstone flagstone
helicopters scudding clouds
dirty synths in upstairs windows
flooded lace curtains and cigar smoke
dirty pimps
20 bucks, up front
for a white knuckle ride
she uses spit and jelly
hand like a blur
for the second time today
salt spurt her lips curled back like a dog
murals tattered on the wall
this could be Cuba, baby
swapping cigarettes
for mobile phones
SIM cards two for one, chum
he pukes in the corner

“Honestly,
how d’ya miss a penalty like that?”

asleep on the train,
wake up in Stratford or
go back home
for no-one anymore
she left me
and from the station platform I
think I hear
a air raid-siren.

"City"

Buildings, Concrete and Cars
People, plains and trains.
Movements, being busy.

Old people and young people
Kids, toddlers and buggies.
Pubs, Clubs and loads of shops.
Everykind of Job.

Construction, demolition and expanding
Parks, Trees, a mixture of old and new.
a halfway house, a stop for a few.
A way of Life, and living
A wheel that turns.
Options, Choices which will it be?
Love it, Hate it.

City

Tall buildings and dirty pavements
Pigeons smothered in congestion fumes
Commuters pushing and shoving their
Way to work
But somewhere in this mêlée
I saw you

I took in your magnitude
You stood out
You brushed past me as you walked past
I turned round to look
And you were looking too
With a wry smile on your face
And then you were gone
Swallowed up by our big lonely city…

I knew you were out there
And I had to find you again
The city could not hide you forever
And it was only a matter of time before we were together

Every night you go back to her
I never expect anything different
But I am just happy I met you
In our bustling city
You came to me
You held my hand
And looked into my eyes
You kissed my face
And then I knew
I had finally found my love…

Can I Apologize?

I’m sorry miss for taking the piss

Where do I start how do I explain?
A lot of things went wrong
Joined a gang just to fit in, it started as a game doing drugs
then got caught with possession getting wasted became an obsession.

Not so tough when I was in prison
Crying at night but nobody listened
No longer a person just a thing, a number, you loose all of your being
Night after night cell slams shut, what can I do, never thought id end up a screw.

Always hated this city
Saw it as my prison
now looking through the iron bars
City lights beaming down
I see it as my freedom now.

Made myself bleed just to feel alive
A release from all the pain inside
No words to express the thoughts in my head

Miss you said you were sick of excuses
That self pity got you nowhere
Bitterness does you no good
Be responsible for all that you’ve done.

The city station clock strikes 12
You’re waiting for the train
Miss I had to tell you the news
Breaking the prison rules.

Got a job, got clean, doing all right
Turned the darkness into light
Decided to bin that knife, to get on with life
Can I apologize?

I’m sorry for my aggression
For throwing that chair
You must have been really scared
You see I never got over the abuse in care.

You smiled and said you were proud
So happy I’d found my way
I’m sorry miss for taking the piss

Belfast
The Hills had eyes; a city touched and horrified
Its bloodied hands embraced me as I struggled to find home.
‘Beal Feirste’, the river’s mouth: the tides turned yet circled
into peaceful lapping. The seagulls merrily squawked;
As I voiced place-names: Royal Avenue, The Albert Clock
In the Docks Samson and Goliath stood proud; in peace.
Its people. Their words rose; welcomed the stranger.
Warmth, strength. The Lagan flows its tranquil length
