Swoop by Fassbinder

Swoop by Fassbinder

The Highway Code in Rhyl
Is overlooked
And lovers
Of the over-cooked
Bend
Should descend
On Rhyl.

One Nil to the Lexus!
The honourable roadkill
It’s animal pelt
Poulticed to the radiator grille

‘That’s just the way it is.
Some things will never change’-

Sings the sales rep
Speeding to Bruce Hornsby
& The Range. Imagines the fender:
A bonnet caked in mange.
The nearest thing to ‘company’
He’ll get.
In his company car.

A kestrel coasts on thermals
Between Clywd clouds
And road-flanked Poplars
Waiting to swoop

----------------------------

A Lexus
Refusing to move down
A gear. Caught out
Takes the corner at forty. Careers.
Slides. Then plunges.
A huge descent …

Overturned.
Crushed. At the foot of the cliffs.
Silent and static
Save a heavenwards pair
of offside spinning hubcaps
And Magic FM still
Playing:

“That’s just the way it is.
Some things will never change”.

A kestrel coasts on thermals
Between Clywd clouds
And road-flanked Poplars
Waiting to swoop
Waiting to swoop
Waiting to swoop
On Rhyl.

The Highway Code in Rhyl
Is overlooked
And lovers
Of the over-cooked
Bend
Should descend on Rhyl.

Virtues by Fassbinder

Virtuous Reality by Fassbinder

A cousin who didn't believe
in The Above
asked how to be virtuous
when ignorant
of The Seven Virtues

"Give Love" he was told
"... then do the same again ...
half a dozen times more".

7 Deadly Sins by Fassbinder

The Seven Deadly Sins by Fassbinder
*All written using the Fibonacci sequence.

Lust

I
Know
How wrong
What we did
Was. But we were just
Overcome by something too strong.

Gluttony

I
got
carried
away. Quite
literally. At
the eat-as-much-as-you-like lunch.

Greed

Blood
Runs
So deep,
That even
Marxist sons don’t share,
The love a father freely gives

Sloth

The
Clock
Alarm,
In some folk’s
Minds, is not only
Not set … doesn’t even exist!

Wrath

Lone
Man
Poor chap
And swearing
Shouts “I’m not waving …
I’m berating”. (and yes – drowning!)

Envy

Green
Eyes
Staring
Comparing
Never quite content
Always want what so and so’s got.

Pride.

The
Man:
Hungry.
Rejected
Free meals and starved.
Because the free meals were free.

* Fibonacci poetry is a literary form based on the Fibonacci number sequence. The sequence begins like this: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21. In order to find the next number in the sequence, you add the two preceding numbers. The sum of these two is the next number, which then is added to the one before it to get to the next number, and so on.

PW: The typical fib is a six line, 20 syllable poem with a syllable count by line of 1/1/2/3/5/8 - with as many syllables per line as the line's corresponding place in the Fibonacci sequence.

MOTHER

When we were all put out to sea
Arthur wossname sailed the ship
Bound for icebergs bound for the deeps
Why did he help when he was on his knees
Himself?
No word of thanks from our little faces
As he,
Undeterred
Steered us all to safety
While we played or sulked
Or sulked or hid
Like kids do. In mud
What was it to him? He wasn’t ‘blood’
But when we were big faces
That vault that housed few happy mem’ries
Started turning itself over…
Like a lone pair of socks
On a fast spin cycle
No one could ignore his efforts
His silent nurturing but loving way
Our “mother” Arthur
Long after Arthur’s final footsteps
Trudged along our difficult trajectory
We increasingly guessed about how he did it-
“…lucky loving upbringing?”
“…spare time on his hands?”
“…sympathy.”

Whatever it was
He had it in spades
And then we dug out his funeral poem
Chosen himself
And left on a shelf.

“Crossing The Bar” by Alfred Lord Tenneyson
With our worldly secular hands
We gripped the laminated verse
And like most poetry
At first
Didn’t ‘get it’

And then found Arthur there
In every living line.

We scuttled off to the library
To find Tennyson
To find Arthur…

To find Mother.

Mother

Mothers’ mother didn’t mother
So mother didn’t mother too
Mother’s mother meant nothing to mother
So why does mine matter?
I dunno …but she does.

Some years later
Joey found joy
The world hadn’t changed
But Joey had.

Yes by Fassbinder

Twenty Questions by Fassbinder
She said “no” to me
To everything
Everyday
Except to having her hand
Everytime
Whatever I asked
‘No, no, no’.
The day the bathroom was fitted
I was fired from my job at 9am
I was home before noon
The place seemed different
Cold and empty
Like me
Moments after clicking the front door to
I froze
From what I could discern
I could hear coming
From a room upstairs
… her.
But it couldn’t be her
Could it?
Because I could hear her
Saying the word “Yes”
Perhaps fifteen times
I shuffled up the stairs
Then scaled the last risers
To the landing
In one
And ran into the bathroom
From whence the sound came
They both looked at me
“Noooo!... she said.
“It’s not what you think…
We’re playing twenty questions”.

Yes by Fassbinder

She shook her head defiantly
paused and said
“Not even for a million quid no”
He looked at the ground
then back in her eyes and whispered
“I-I, just want to get you into bed, p-lease”
“I bet you do, and then in five minutes you will disappear”
his mother said.
“... and the answer’s still no!...
It’s got bugs in it and worse
I’ve tried to tell the nurse
Take me ‘ome son
let me die with me creature comforts
will you son, will you?”
“Yes, mother
yes okay”.

Dream by Fassbinder

Dream by Fassbinder

And while you slept -

I climbed the mountains
Sailed the seas
Without any family
With relative ease

Achieved the grades
Earned the money
Never failed
To find life funny

Ended famine
… Third World debt
Invented health chocolate
And the Green Jumbo Jet

Saved the whale/
Endangered Meer cat
Worked out Boehms Theory
On the back of a beer mat

Became a Lad’s lad
And a perfect gent
Gave up sinning
For more than lent

Bigged you up
Enhanced your status
Mastered ‘Happy Birthday’
On a cazoo, with flatus

Said sorry for neglect
When I meant to help
Improved your physical
And mental health .

Made our drug of choice
Five portions of fruit
In the space of 10 minutes
Got the world to follow suit

And then I awoke

While you kept sleeping.

Samaritans Poetry Window 2009

The City ⓒFassbinder 2009

The city shapes you:

Square mile
Scaffolders poles
Pattern facades
Borders

Round of drinks
Triangle of Bizarre Love
Curved life.

Oval to
Mornington Crescent or
Belsize Park then
Bendy Bus and
Circle Line
Black taxi with its turning circle
Traffic Cones snake around

The Gherkin.
