Rhythm by Justine

Rhythm

You have it
I love your
Drum talk
Your meter
Your method
Your pulse
The beat
The pace
A son clave
A boss nova
A short delay
Your tempo
Doubles
Triples
It affects my balance
Your prosody
Your stresses
Long short
Short long
They command me
Beat me
Pitch, low in deliverance
High in effect
You’re a Griot
Oral
Gun
Dun
Go
Do
Pa
Ta
Your African
A Djembe
Tabla complex
My drum
Keeps you in line
In harmony
In time
We make sounds
Variations
In Length
Accentuating
The highs, lows
A flow
A wave
Symmetry
The ripples

Always an event
I clap and
You gesture me
Always in time

Surrender by Ambrose

Stretched at the limit
Breathless in the air
Coming to term
Weakening
Close to surrender

Knowing your opponent
Cracking the mind game
Momentarily let it go
Tactfully
Choosing to surrender

With sophisticated weaponry
Not invited to the battlefield
Chasing imaginary enemies
At the end
Forced to surrender

Not by virtue
Submitting to the best
Neither a sign of weakness
Only by love
Convenient to surrender

Like a river on its course
Obstacles on its path
Flexible all the way
Winning
Ignoring to surrender

That irresistible smile
From the world’s child
In shared destiny
Falling for it
Never to surrender

Dream by Annette

Dream

When I was young-about 9 or 10
I watched the men on the TV
Who spoke so twee, about money and MPs
I knew then what I wanted to be

The years eased in; the forms filled in
The referees asked, their titled names-
In letters large and small. The ones I sought
After being taught, that respect was
Neither won nor gained
Without those letters on your name.
Nice house, good car-markers of success
“You’ll go far,” they said
Whilst sneering at John from down the estate
And later, a prayer before lunch-time break
“For Children in Africa-a Christian sake”

And yet had I really listened to
Their Christian talk; “better your background”
I’ve have learned that the world
Was largely planned; we were actors
In a script already writ
As Johnny would say without shame.

And yet we all had our dreams
When we were young and watched TV
Of Worlds so far apart;
Of people we wanted to be.

New by Anissa

NEW

BY ANISSA LADJEMI

Never forget me and always remember to be true

I need to get out need to breathe again
To leave this place to go somewhere new
I hope you understand
Need to see if I can go it alone

Packing my bags and boarding the plane
To a new place
To an unknown land so different from my own
What will become of me?

How we met so unexpected a fleeting moment in time
I was weak and fell for your Latino charm
And so are romance began
Poor boy with holes in his clothes
Your brown skin against mine two souls intertwined
Your soft lips caressing my neck
There is no turning back

I remember your words
You said you believed in a better world beyond this one
Where there is no division between rich and poor
No poverty no hunger no hate fuelled wars
I smiled you were always so full of hope.

I sit on the beach where we met and think of the time we had
Cut short by a violent act your life taken away
While trying to help your fellow man
In a land of extremes of beauty love of good and bad
You have entered a better world you are at peace now

A long time has passed
I think of what you said to me
Stay courageous and strong
Live for the moments that bring you joy
Don’t shed any tears for me for they shall pass
Live with an open heart so you can create joyful moments with another
Somebody new
I will miss the moments we shared
Never forget me and always remember to be true.

City by Annette

Belfast

The Hills had eyes; a city touched and horrified
Its bloodied hands embraced me as I struggled to find home.
‘Beal Feirste’, the river’s mouth: the tides turned yet circled
into peaceful lapping. The seagulls merrily squawked;
As I voiced place-names: Royal Avenue, The Albert Clock
In the Docks Samson and Goliath stood proud; in peace.
Its people. Their words rose; welcomed the stranger.Warmth, strength. The Lagan flows its tranquil length
